Set in the rugged, beautiful wilderness of the Zambezi Valley escarpment, Chizarira is one of Zimbabwe’s least known parks. The diverse range of habitats found within Chizarira contributes to the wide range of animals and plants that live here. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard are common as are kudu, bushbuck and sable. Bird watchers will delight at the sight of crowned eagles, black eagles and Pel’s fishing owl.
A highlight of a visit to Chizarira is a walking safari with a licensed guide. These unrestricted walking safaris are for the nature enthusiast looking for a genuine wilderness experience. Chizarira’s mild climate is subject to two distinctive periods. The Dry season (April to October) is marked by generally warm days, but the cold nights can test the effectiveness of your thickest clothing. Everything changes with the coming of the very warm Wet season (November to March), especially in October when the park’s lower altitudes bake in temperatures of up to 40°C/104°F.

Wildlife Experience
Chizarira boasts a rich tapestry of biodiversity. From elusive leopards to herds of majestic elephants, the park is home to an array of wildlife. Visitors can encounter over 60 mammal species, including the iconic African lion and the endangered African wild dog. Additionally, Chizarira is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 350 avian species gracing its skies. What sets Chizarira apart is its extraordinary topography. Dubbed the “Home of the Hidden Gorges,” the park is a landscape of dramatic escarpments, plunging valleys, and meandering rivers. Guided walks through this rugged terrain offer a glimpse into a world rarely seen, with opportunities for awe-inspiring views of the valleys below.
Significant populations of elephant, cheetah, zebra, buffalo, lion and leopard are found in the park. There are also many species of smaller game, including the klipspringer, famous for its ability to inhabit rocky outcrops; sable, common waterbuck, kudu, bushbuck, and steenbok. The black rhinos that used to trudge the length and breadth of the park were relocated to intensive protection zones to thwart poaching and threatening extinction.
